The following courses are available and are part of the standard offering of the Technical Training Services. All applications should be made via the Technical Training Service web site with payment via EDH. Members of external institutes without EDH accounts or with no access to the online form should contact Technical Training .

Important Notes - to be read before applying for a course

  1. You can only give preferences in the EDH form. You CANNOT book the course for a specific date!
  2. Do not make travel plans before receiving an invitation for a specific session from the Technical Training service.
  3. Always wait for an invitation to a specific course date. Do not just show up. We cannot accept more than the invited number of participants.
  4. There is a small charge of 100 CHF for each course. If you can not attend the course to which you are invited, this fee can be refunded if you cancel your registration at least one week before the start of the course. If you give less than one week notice that you can not attend, this fee will not be refunded.

4.5 day course

Read the Course Brochure

This course normally starts with a 0.5-day introduction to the front-end software and hardware used in the LHC experiments.

During the course itself you will visit the Course Download page to get the exercise material.

Some parts of this course have been recorded. You can download the recordings for your own private viewing at any time.

No Handouts:
More and more people are now working "paperless" and prefer to read the course "handouts" on-screen. By default we no longer give out printed handouts. So:

If you would like a printed handout anyway:

Please inform HR beforehand (at the email address they used to invite you to a particular session.) Do not feel ashamed to ask. The trainer says he likes to scribble on paper copies too!

If you will be following the materials on-screen:

At the time of writing, the machines in the training room have only one screen. This can be awkward if you are trying to display the materials and do an exercise at the same time (because of the lack of enough screen real-estate.) We currently recommend (and remind you to bring) your own PDF-capable device (iPad, laptop etc.) if you intend to follow "on-screen".

You can make a request to attend this course if you are already a PVSS/WinCC-OA Authorized user (if not you can register here ).

3 day course

This course introduces DCS developers to the usage of hierarchies and finite state machines in LHC experiments, based on the JCOP Framework.

This course is intended for the controls hierarchy experts and developers of the sub-detector controls systems.

A good practical knowledge of PVSS/WinCC-OA                      and the JCOP Framework as well as knowledge on detector operation is essential.
